How to tie it
Run UTC 70 from the eye back to the bend, then tie in a fine strand of gold tinsel at the rear and leave it hanging.
Dub a slim body of cinnamon-ginger dubbing forward to the 65% mark. Keep it tight and thin. A sedge body should be a narrow cigar, and bulk here fights the CDC's ability to float the fly.
Rib forward with four or five open turns of gold tinsel and tie off. The gold segments the body and throws a small flash that reads as the gas bubble on a hatching caddis.
Stack two natural grey or black CDC feathers and tie them in as a low tent wing extending just past the bend, securing at the 70% mark and trimming the butts short.
Load a dubbing loop with CDC barbs, spin it, and wind two or three turns in front of the wing as a hackle collar. Spinning the barbs rather than winding a whole feather gives an even, radiating collar that holds far more air.
Whip finish a small head and sweep the collar fibres slightly back with your fingers. Fished dry it rides high on the collar and wing; when it eventually sinks it still works as a drowned sedge, so there is no hurry to change flies.
