Cinder Worm

Worm · Striped Bass · Bluefish · Sea Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater hook (e.g. Mustad 34007), 2-6
  • Thread Red 140 denier

Materials

  • Tail Red buzzer wrap (Sparse marabou, one shank long)
  • Tail hackle Red neck hackle (One saddle hackle tip (optional))
  • Body Bright red material (SLF dubbing or red Estaz)
  • Head Black ostrich herl (Deer body hair, spun)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the red thread, winding to the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse red marabou tail about one shank long, adding a red saddle hackle tip alongside for extra wiggle if wanted.
  3. Dub or wrap a slim red body forward to the 75% mark, keeping it thin and wormy.
  4. Switch to strong thread, stack a clump of black deer hair and spin it at the 80% mark.
  5. Pack the deer hair back tight with your fingers, then whip finish at the eye.
  6. Trim the spun head to a small, rounded bullet, leaving it buggy on top so the fly floats in the film.
