Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry hook (e.g. TMC 5212), 6-12
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Underbody Black ostrich herl (2mm foam strip)
  • Overbody Black ostrich herl (Second 2mm foam strip)
  • Wing Dun microfibetts (Zelon or organza)
  • Legs Barred black/orange rubber legs (Round rubber, two pairs)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (Foam tab or poly tuft)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the thread, laying a base the length of the shank.
  2. Bind a black foam strip along the top of the shank, then lash a second layer over it to build the thick cicada body.
  3. Segment the body with 2-3 tight thread wraps, tying in a splayed pair of rubber legs at the rear segment.
  4. Tie in a flat dun Zelon wing over the back, reaching just past the bend, so it lands with a splat and lies flat.
  5. Add the front pair of legs and a short orange foam tab up top for visibility at the 85% mark.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and cement the thread segments.
