Chubby Trico Spinner

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook (TMC 100), 18-22
  • Thread Black 14/0 (very fine)

Materials

  • Tail White Microfibbets or mayfly tails (2-3 fibers, split)
  • Abdomen Black thread or black superfine dubbing (as needed)
  • Wing White poly yarn / EP fibers (spinner-style, spent) (small bunch)
  • Foam post/thorax Small strip of black foam (the 'chubby' element) (1 tiny strip)
  • Thorax Black Superfine dubbing (as needed)

How to tie it

  1. Start the fine thread and tie in 2-3 white Microfibbet tails at the bend, splayed wide for a spinner stance and to help the tiny fly float.
  2. Build a very slim black abdomen of thread or sparse superfine dubbing forward to the thorax.
  3. Tie in white poly yarn across the hook as spent spinner wings, lying flat and out to each side.
  4. Add a tiny strip of black foam over the thorax as a floating post/indicator, the 'chubby' twist that keeps this micro-fly visible and afloat.
  5. Dub a small black thorax around the wing and foam to lock everything in.
  6. Whip finish a tiny head and add a dot of floatant to the wing and foam.
  7. Keep the whole fly sparse and slim except for the foam so it matches a spent trico.
