Terrestrial · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 3XL dry-fly/terrestrial hook (TMC 5262), larger sizes, 4-8
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Black/pearl Krystal Flash (few strands)
  • Underbody Black or rusty-orange Ice Dub (as needed)
  • Body Black 2mm foam (orange/rust belly) (1 strip)
  • Wing White para-post yarn (1 clump)
  • Legs Barred black/orange Sili legs (2-3 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a Krystal Flash tail at the bend of the big hook.
  2. Tie down black foam (with a rusty-orange belly showing) at the bend, leaving a stub.
  3. Dub a black or rusty Ice Dub underbody forward.
  4. Segment the foam forward into 3 chunky body segments to build the large salmonfly profile.
  5. Add a white para-post wing and barred black/orange legs at each segment.
  6. Finish behind the eye, whip finish and cement.
  7. Keep it big and buggy to match Pteronarcys (giant salmonfly) adults.
