Chubby Chernobyl Black-Tan

Terrestrial · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry-fly/terrestrial hook (TMC 5212 or 5262), 8-14
  • Thread Tan or black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Pearl or black Krystal Flash (few strands)
  • Underbody Tan Ice Dub or hare's ear (as needed)
  • Body Black 2mm foam over tan (1 strip)
  • Wing White para-post yarn or EP fibers (1 clump)
  • Legs Barred brown/tan Sili legs (2 pairs)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a short Krystal Flash tail at the bend.
  2. Tie down a strip of black 2mm foam (over a tan underbody, so the belly shows tan) at the bend, leaving a stub tail.
  3. Dub a tan Ice Dub or hare's ear underbody forward.
  4. Segment the foam forward with thread wraps to form 2-3 body segments.
  5. Tie in a white para-post wing and barred brown legs at each segment.
  6. Finish behind the eye, whip finish and add a drop of cement.
  7. Trim wing and legs; the black top over tan belly reads like a stonefly or hopper.
