Chocolate Foam Emerger

Nymph · Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved emerger/pupa hook (e.g. TMC 2487), 16-20
  • Thread Brown 8/0

Materials

  • Shuck Brown permanent marker (A few fibers of Zelon (optional))
  • Body Chocolate brown (Tying thread or fine dubbing)
  • Rib Gold middle (Extra-fine wire)
  • Wing White uni stretch (Thin strip of closed-cell foam)
  • Thorax Brown permanent marker (Fine dubbing or peacock)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the thread, winding to the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse brown Zelon shuck a half shank long if using.
  3. Bind in the fine gold wire, then build a slim chocolate-brown body forward to the 70% mark.
  4. Rib the wire forward in 5-6 open turns and tie off for segmentation.
  5. Tie in a thin white foam strip pointing forward over the eye as a short wing/post, so it sits in the film and adds visibility.
  6. Dub a small thorax behind and in front of the wing, whip finish and cement.
