Chironomid Larva Bead

Midge · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/pupa hook (e.g. TMC 2457), 12-16
  • Thread Red 8/0

Materials

  • Bead Silver bead (Small tungsten or brass bead)
  • Body Blood red (Red thread or small red D-Rib)
  • Rib Silver metal tape (Fine wire (optional))
  • Finish Clear head cement (UV resin or head cement)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the bead to the eye, mount the hook and start the thread.
  2. Wind the thread all the way around the bend and slightly down the point for the curved, wormy look of a bloodworm.
  3. Lay a smooth thread body forward to behind the bead, keeping it thin, then bind in and rib the wire in 5-6 open turns if using.
  4. Wrap the thread body back and forth to a slight taper and tie off behind the bead.
  5. Whip finish behind the bead.
  6. Coat the whole body with a thin skim of UV resin or cement so it glistens like a real larva.
