Materials
Mirror Image (or similar synthetic wing hair) White uni stretch (Two thin clumps, each split into a 1/3 and 2/3 portion)
Mirror Image Brown permanent marker (Two thin clumps, split the same way)
Crystal Flash Natural / pearl flash (Three or four strands as a lateral line)
Midge Flash Tan h o flash n slinky fine (About six strands, three at a time)
Midge Flash Root beer or peacock herl (A few strands for the topping)
Stick-on eyes Your choice eyes (One pair)
Epoxy Clear uv resin (Enough to coat the head)
How to tie it
Start the thread with a jam knot a little back from the eye. The whole fly is built in the front quarter of the shank, so you need very little thread base.
Take a thin clump of white Mirror Image, cut it into a one-third and a two-thirds portion, set the shorter piece aside, and tease the tips of the longer piece out so it tapers rather than looking like a paintbrush.
Tie the shorter white piece in underneath the shank and the longer piece over the top, so the fly is dressed top and bottom.
Tie in three or four strands of Crystal Flash along each side as a lateral line.
Add a clump of brown Mirror Image over the top, teased out the same way and about the same length as the white, then lay in about three strands of tan Midge Flash on each side. Keep the flash minimal, this fly is meant to look subtle and natural.
Build the second layer: tie in the reserved one-third clump of white, teased out and streamlined, then fold it back over itself and tie it down so the layer reverses; repeat with a matching clump of brown.
Whip finish the tying thread and cut it off, then start clear monofilament thread at the head with a jam knot.
Tease out a few strands of root beer or peacock Midge Flash, tie them on top as a wing topping and fold them back.
Stick an eye on each side of the head and take a few wraps of mono thread over them to hold them until the epoxy goes on, once epoxied, the mono disappears.
