Start the Black thread mid-shank and bind back to the start of the bend. There is no tail.
Spin a very thin noodle of Black dry fly dubbing onto the thread and wrap a slim body forward, stopping a little past the halfway point of the shank.
Pull a small tuft of the fluff from the base of a hen feather, lay it on top so the tips extend just past the bend, and seat it with a pinch wrap followed by three securing wraps.
Snip the excess fluff in front, then take a few wraps over the butts to smooth the area so the hackle will wrap cleanly.
Tie in the smallest Black or Grizzly dry fly hackle you have and snip the excess stem in front.
Grip the tip in hackle pliers and take three or four turns with no tension on the stem, then bind it off with a couple of extra securing wraps.
Whip finish in the space behind the eye and add a drop of head cement.
