Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard saltwater flats hook, turned-down eye (e.g. Gamakatsu SL45), 1/0-6
  • Thread Tan 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Eyes/Weight Gold middle (One tungsten jig bomb or dumbbell, sized to hook)
  • Tail Coyote tan (A pinch of craft fur or EP fibers, one shank long)
  • Flash Gold flashabou (4-6 strands Krystal Flash)
  • Body/Collar Coyote tan (Dubbing loop or EP fibers, chunky)
  • Weed guard Clear weed guard (Single loop of 20 lb mono (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start the thread just behind the eye.
  2. Bind the tungsten eyes on top well forward, at the 85% mark, so the fly jigs hook-point-up and rides down over mud.
  3. Move to the bend and tie in a sparse craft-fur tail one shank long, then add the flash the same length.
  4. Build a chunky body forward in a dubbing loop or by tying in fibers, keeping it wider than the tail for the meaty profile.
  5. Figure-8 dubbing around the eyes to fill the head, then sweep all fibers back and pinch to shape.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and add a drop of cement.
