Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard saltwater/flats hook, 2-6
  • Thread Tan 140 denier

Materials

  • Beads Tungsten jig bombs (two, buried in the body)
  • Tail/antennae Tan carapace (arctic fox with a few Krystal Flash strands)
  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (mono burnt beads, one per side)
  • Body Tan/olive carapace (flat diamond braid)
  • Hackle Tan hackle (one saddle, palmered)
  • Wing/shellback Tan sheet foam (arctic fox over the back)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook point-up and lock two tungsten jig bombs onto the shank so the fly inverts yet still sinks fast.
  2. Start thread at the bend and tie in a sparse arctic fox tail with a few flash strands as the antennae.
  3. Add a burnt-mono eye to each side just ahead of the tail.
  4. Tie in a tan saddle hackle and a length of flat braid, then wrap the braid forward over the beads to build the body.
  5. Palmer the hackle forward through the body in open turns to suggest legs and tie off.
  6. Pull a sparse arctic fox wing over the top as a shellback and bind it behind the eye.
  7. Whip finish and seal the head with UV resin.
