Chewing Gum Cased Caddis

Classic Recipe

  • Hook Barbless jig or curved nymph hook (Fulling Mill Jig Force), 12-16
  • Thread Brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Black or copper slotted tungsten (2.8mm) (1)
  • Case FNF Chewing Gum worm material (brown or olive) (1 length)
  • Larva/head Cream or green dubbing (the 'grub' poking out) (small amount)
  • Legs Brown partridge hackle fibers (few fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Slide a slotted tungsten bead to the eye of the jig hook and start thread behind it.
  2. Run thread to the bend and tie in the stretchy Chewing Gum worm material.
  3. Wrap the Chewing Gum forward in touching turns to build a plush, buggy case that trout hold onto longer, stopping short of the bead.
  4. At the front, dub a short segment of cream or green larva dubbing to represent the caddis grub peeking out of its case.
  5. Add a few brown partridge fibers as legs at the throat, sweeping back.
  6. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
  7. Keep the case chunky and the exposed larva small and bright.
