Terrestrial · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL dry/nymph hook, 6-12
  • Thread Black 140 denier

Materials

  • Body (bottom) Black ostrich herl (2mm foam strip)
  • Body (top) Tan carapace (2mm foam strip)
  • Legs Barred black/brown rubber legs (round rubber, two per side)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (2mm foam tab)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and run a thread base along the shank.
  2. Stack a tan foam strip over a black foam strip and bind both at the bend to start the rear body segment.
  3. Bring thread forward and cinch the foam down hard at the midpoint to pinch off the ant's waist.
  4. Figure-8 a pair of barred rubber legs at the waist so they splay to both sides.
  5. Cinch the foam once more near the front to form the front segment and add a second pair of legs.
  6. Fold the tan strip forward as a small head, bind behind the eye, and add an orange foam indicator tab.
  7. Whip finish under the foam and cement; trim the legs to a shank length.
