Chartreuse Jig Damsel

Materials

  • Slotted tungsten bead (1)
  • Mink zonker (Tail, a body and a half long)
  • Ultra wire, extra small (One length)
  • Marabou Chartreuse marabou (One clump)
  • UV Straggle chenille, 5mm Chartreuse uv straggle (Legs)
  • Permanent marker Dark permanent marker (Eyes (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Set a size 12 jig hook with a slotted tungsten bead and start fluorescent chartreuse thread.
  2. Tie in a mink zonker and trim it to about a body and a half in length. Mink has finer fibres than rabbit, so the tail stays slim and does not overwhelm a size 12 fly.
  3. Add extra small wire for the rib, then marabou tied in by the tips.
  4. Twist the marabou into a rope and wind it up the shank, leaving a gap behind the bead. The twist is what carries all the movement and brings this pattern to life.
  5. Wiggle the wire forward through the marabou so as few fibres as possible get trapped, tie it off at the bead and helicopter it out.
  6. Wrap 5mm UV Straggle in the gap behind the bead for the legs. It does not really need more flash, but the UV highlights add a lot and damsel nymphs are constantly kicking their legs.
  7. Whip finish, glue the wraps, and if you like put a marker dot on each side for eyes. The jig hook is the point of the pattern. It lets you fish it right down in the weeds where the trout hunt damsels.
