Tyer Recipe
Hook 3X-6X long streamer hook (Limerick bend shown), #6-12 (tied here in #10)
Thread Black 70 denier (140 makes the head easier)
Materials
Mylar tinsel Gold oval tinsel (One strand, size 14, for the tag and rib)
Wool yarn Yellow wool yarn (One strand split out of a four-strand yarn)
Bucktail Black bucktail (A small tuft for the wing)
Jungle cock Natural jungle cock (One small nail per side (optional))
Model paint Yellow mcflylon (For the eyes)
Fine point marker Black ostrich herl (For the pupils)
UV resin Clear uv resin (Two thin coats on the head)
How to tie it
Start the thread a little back from the eye and tie in the gold mylar tinsel with the gold side toward the hook, binding it back along the shank.
Split a single strand out of the yellow wool yarn, tie it in at the front (this keeps the rear of the body free of bulk and builds a slight underbody), and wrap it back and then forward in tight touching turns to make a slim, slightly fuzzy body.
Wrap the tinsel forward: a few close turns at the very back to form a tag, then evenly spaced turns up the body as a rib, and tie it off at the front.
Stack a small, sparse tuft of black bucktail and tie it in on top so the wing reaches just past the bend, taking the tie-in a little further back than usual because the head will be large.
Before the wraps get tight, lift the wing and take one wrap around just the bucktail (over the top, under it, and around again) so it cannot spin around the shank, then bring the thread forward with tight wraps and trim the butts close.
Build a little of the head, then tie a small jungle cock nail flat along each side as cheeks, keeping them short so most of the yellow body still shows. Trim the stems.
Wrap a large, smooth thread head. It needs to be big enough to paint, whip finish and coat it with UV resin.
Once the resin is cured and dry, dot a yellow eye on each side with a cut-off Q-tip or similar applicator (test the dot size on paper first), let it dry, add a black pupil with a fine marker, and seal with a second coat of UV resin.
