Tie Uni-Stretch gills in on a Daiichi 1760 with white thread, whip finish and cut the thread away, then slide the black nickel bead up over the wraps.
Restart the white thread and tie in extra small red wire followed by a strand of smoke Buzzer Wrap.
Bring the white thread up, whip finish and cut it out, then bring in black thread to form the rest of the taper. Deliberately leaving gaps where the white underneath shows through. That white-through-black is what makes the fly read charcoal rather than flat black.
Wrap the smoke Buzzer Wrap forward in touching turns and tie it off. Smoke over the banded white and black underbody gives a smoky, translucent grey.
Open-spiral the red wire up the body for segmentation and helicopter it out behind the bead.
Whip finish, trim the gills, and give it a shot of your favourite glue or resin. Simple, and it slays.
