Nymph · Trout · Advanced · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL curved nymph/scud hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 70 denier

Materials

  • Bead Fluorescent orange (hot) tungsten bead (one, sized to the hook gap)
  • Tail Brown permanent marker (round rubber, split)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (small wire)
  • Body Black/peacock ice dub (peacock-black dubbing)
  • Wing case Pearl flashabou (flashback strip)
  • Legs Brown/black barred rubber legs (round rubber, one per side)
  • Thorax Black ostrich herl (dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the hot orange tungsten bead to the eye, mount the hook and start thread behind the bead.
  2. At the bend tie in two short splayed rubber tail fibers and a length of copper wire for the rib.
  3. Dub a slim tapered body forward to the 60% mark using less dubbing than you think.
  4. Counter-wrap the copper rib forward in 5 open turns and tie off for a segmented, durable body.
  5. Tie in a pearl flashback strip pointing back, then dub a fatter thorax up to the bead.
  6. Figure-8 one barred rubber leg per side at the thorax, pull the flashback over the top as a wing case, and bind it behind the bead.
  7. Whip finish behind the bead and cement.
