Peacock herl Natural peacock herl (Six or seven strands)
Black squirrel tail (or calf tail / fine bucktail / black hackle fibers) Black mayfly tail fibers (Small clump for the wing)
Peacock sword fibers Natural peacock herl (Three or four per side for the cheeks)
Head cement Clear head cement (A drop)
How to tie it
Lay a thread base from behind the eye back to the start of the bend.
Fold two strands of dark Crystal Flash around the thread, catch them in on top at the bend with two or three wraps, and trim the tail a little longer than the hook gap.
Tie in the size 14 mylar tinsel at the bend with the silver side facing the hook so silver shows when it is wrapped, binding it along the top of the shank.
Snip the brittle tips off six or seven peacock herls, tie them in at the bend, then spin them into a loose rope in hackle pliers (five or six turns. Spinning tight will break them).
Wrap the herl rope forward to just behind the eye, tie it off with two wraps and trim, then add a few extra locking wraps.
Counter-wrap the tinsel forward in four evenly spaced turns, tie off, fold the tag back and lock it in before trimming (mylar will still cut thread).
Stack a small clump of black squirrel tail, wax the thread, and tie it in on top as a wing reaching to the bend. First wraps soft, then tight, and slip one wrap up under the wing to keep it from spinning around the shank. Trim the butts.
Tie three or four peacock sword fibers along each side as cheeks, about half the length of the wing, and trim the butts.
Take the thread back behind the eye, build a small tidy head, whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
