Reference Recipe

  • Hook 2XL nymph hook, 8-12
  • Thread Brown or black 6/0 or 8/0

Materials

  • Bead (optional) Black or gold bead (tungsten, sized to hook)
  • Tail Brown permanent marker (2 goose biots, split)
  • Body Brown/black material (stonefly dubbing)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (wire)
  • Wingcase Dark mottled turkey (slip)
  • Legs/thorax Natural dun rubber legs (CDC fibers + dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Optionally slide a tungsten bead to the eye, mount the hook, and start thread at the bend.
  2. Tie in two goose biots splayed into a forked tail, half a shank long.
  3. Dub a robust tapered abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the copper rib in 5-6 turns and tie off.
  5. Tie in a turkey wingcase slip, then dub a fat thorax and fold a pinch of CDC along each side as legs.
  6. Pull the wingcase over the thorax, bind at the eye, and whip finish.
