CDC Hare's Ear Caddis

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-16
  • Thread Tan 8/0

Materials

  • Body Hare's ear natural (hare's mask dubbing)
  • Wing Natural dun wing bud (CDC fibers)
  • Overwing (optional) Natural case (few deer hairs)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the 70% mark, then run to the bend.
  2. Dub a shaggy hare's ear body forward to the 70% mark, leaving the guard hairs picked out and buggy.
  3. Tie in a CDC wing, tips reaching just past the bend, tented low over the body.
  4. Optionally add a few deer hairs over the CDC for a crisper silhouette.
  5. Bind the wing butts, trim them square, and pick out a few body fibers as legs.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and snip.
