Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 10-16
  • Thread Tan or olive 8/0

Materials

  • Body/hackle Natural dun hackle (1 CDC feather)
  • Wing Natural case (fine deer or elk hair)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread just behind the eye, then wrap back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a single CDC feather by its tip at the bend, then return the thread to just behind the eye.
  3. Palmer the CDC feather forward in touching turns as a combined body and hackle, tie it off behind the eye, and snip the stub.
  4. Stack a small bunch of deer or elk hair and measure it one shank length.
  5. Bind the hair in at the eye with the tips angled back as a low wing, letting the butts flare over the eye.
  6. Trim the flared butts to a short blunt head and whip finish.
