Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard nymph hook, 14-16
  • Thread Gray 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Wood duck / mallard flank (6-8 fibers)
  • Body Gray-brown material (callibaetis or muskrat dubbing)
  • Rib Gold middle (fine wire)
  • Wingcase Dark mottled wing slip (mallard or turkey fibers)
  • Thorax Gray-brown material (dubbing)
  • Legs/gills Natural dun rubber legs (CDC fibers)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread mid-shank, then wrap back to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short tail of wood duck fibers, half a shank long.
  3. Dub a slim tapered abdomen forward to the 65% mark.
  4. Counter-wrap the gold rib in 5-6 evenly spaced turns and tie off.
  5. Pull a slip of dark mallard over the top for a wingcase tie-in point, leaving it folded back.
  6. Dub a fuller thorax, then fold a pinch of CDC fibers along each side as legs and gills.
  7. Draw the wingcase forward over the thorax, bind at the eye, and whip finish.
