How to tie it
Slide the black tungsten bead on and start brown thread behind it. Tungsten rather than brass here, this one is meant to get down.
Tie in copper wire and wrap it back the whole way along the shank, finishing just past the barb, slightly further back than usual. Wrapping the wire down the shank both weights the fly and builds the underbody.
Clip half a dozen pheasant tail fibres, tie them in by the tips with the tips facing the front of the hook, no more than three turns, and trim the waste tips off.
Dub the bright green body forward to about the 75% mark. Do not carry it any further or you will crowd the head, and you still want a good showing of green for the fish to see.
Bring the pheasant tail fibres forward over the top as an overwing and lock them down in front with three or four wraps.
Wrap the copper wire forward through the body to just behind the bead, take it back over itself and tie it off, again to load weight into the front of the fly.
Prepare a brown CDC feather as you would a soft hackle, strip the fibres away from the very tip, tie it in by the tip and trim the tip.
Take two wraps of CDC only, no more, or the legs get out of hand, then wiggle the thread through the fibres twice so you are not trapping them all under one point.
Gather all the CDC fibres, sweep them back under thumb and forefinger and put in a couple of locking wraps so the legs slingshot to the rear.
Pinch the legs and trim them so they only just extend past the body, this is a short-bodied fly, so nothing extravagant.
Dub a very small amount of peacock Ice Dub at the head for a darker head and a little flash. Less is more here: whatever room you have left is all you get.
Half hitch, then whip finish. Finish the head with a little epoxy or hard head.
