Reference Recipe

  • Hook Curved scud/emerger hook, 14-18
  • Thread Olive 8/0

Materials

  • Trailing shuck Amber vinyl rib medium (sparse Z-lon fibers)
  • Body Olive-brown material (hare's ear or caddis dubbing)
  • Rib Gold middle (fine wire)
  • Emerging wing Natural dun wing bud (1 CDC feather)
  • Thorax Olive-brown material (dubbing)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread at the 75% mark.
  2. Bind a sparse amber Z-lon shuck at the bend, no longer than half a shank.
  3. Dub a slim, tapered body forward to the 65% mark using half the dubbing you think you need.
  4. Counter-wrap the fine gold rib forward in 4-5 open turns and tie off.
  5. Tie in a CDC feather by the tip and fold it forward over the back as a low emerging wing, stopping at the eye.
  6. Dub a small thorax to lock the wing base, sweeping stray fibers back.
  7. Whip finish and snip.
