Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook (e.g. TMC 100), 14-20
  • Thread Rusty brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail Split microfibetts, dun (6 fibers)
  • Abdomen Turkey biot, rusty brown (1)
  • Underwing CDC plume, light dun/white (2 feathers)
  • Overwing Krystal Organza or poly yarn, dun (small clump)
  • Thorax Superfine dubbing, rusty brown (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Split a small bunch of microfibetts into a tail one and a half shank lengths long at the bend.
  2. Tie in the rusty-brown biot by the tip, cement the shank, and wrap forward to the 65% mark for a segmented abdomen.
  3. Tie in two CDC plumes plus a wisp of Organza/poly two eye-widths behind the eye, pointing forward.
  4. Figure-eight the wing material flat to each side as spent wings.
  5. Dub a slim rusty thorax over the wing base and whip finish.
