Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL dry-fly hook, 10-12
  • Thread Brown 6/0

Materials

  • Shuck Amber/brown material (Zelon or antron trailing shuck)
  • Abdomen Brown permanent marker (Turkey biot)
  • Wing Dun microfibetts (CDC feathers)
  • Thorax Brown permanent marker (Fine dubbing)
  • Hackle Brown grizzly hackle (One feather (optional, sparse))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a sparse amber Zelon trailing shuck about half a shank long to imitate the trapped nymphal skin.
  3. Tie in a brown biot by the tip and wrap it forward to the 60% mark for a segmented abdomen.
  4. Tie in a CDC wing standing up and slightly forward at the front of the abdomen.
  5. Dub a brown thorax around the wing base; add one or two sparse turns of brown grizzly hackle here if you want extra float.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and trim any hackle flat underneath so the fly sits low.
