Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 14-18
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (Fine dry-fly dubbing)
  • Wing/legs Natural dun rubber legs (One CDC feather)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thin thread base to the bend.
  2. Dub a shiny black rear gaster over the back third of the shank, then take a bare wrap to pinch the waist.
  3. Tie in a CDC feather by the tip at the waist.
  4. Take one turn of CDC at the waist to form a swept collar of legs, then bind and snip the stem.
  5. Dub a slightly smaller front head hump forward, leaving room at the eye.
  6. Whip finish at the eye and sweep the CDC fibers so they lie back over the body.
