Reference Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry-fly hook, 12-16
  • Thread Black 8/0

Materials

  • Body Black ostrich herl (2mm foam strip (two humps))
  • Wing Natural dun wing bud (One or two CDC feathers)
  • Indicator Orange permanent marker (Small foam or para-post tab (optional))

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and lay a thread base to the bend.
  2. Bind a strip of black foam at the bend and cinch it at the back third to form a fat rear gaster hump.
  3. Tie in a CDC feather flat over the body as a wing, reaching to the back of the gaster.
  4. Figure-8 the CDC fibers or add a sparse second CDC clump at the waist to suggest legs.
  5. Fold the foam forward and cinch it just behind the eye to form the smaller front head hump.
  6. Add a small orange foam sighter on top if you want visibility, then whip finish under the head.
