Carp Craw

Streamer · Carp · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook Heavy jig or streamer hook, 6-8
  • Thread Rust 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (Medium lead dumbbell)
  • Claws/tail Rust or olive material (Rabbit strip or marabou)
  • Body Rust rabbit fur blended with goat hair (Crawfish/hare dubbing)
  • Legs Barred orange rubber legs (Round rubber, 2 pairs)
  • Carapace Mottled brown pectoral fins (Thin Skin or Scud Back)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and bind a lead dumbbell a third of a shank behind the eye so the fly rides point-up (claws lead the retrieve).
  2. At the bend, tie in a short rust rabbit strip or marabou clump for the claws, kept to about half a shank.
  3. Tie in a strip of mottled Thin Skin at the bend to fold forward later, then dub a shaggy rust body forward to the dumbbell.
  4. Figure-8 two pairs of barred rubber legs along the body so they splay to the sides.
  5. Pull the Thin Skin over the top as a carapace and bind it down behind the dumbbell.
  6. Dub a small collar in front of the eyes, whip finish, and pick out the body dubbing to suggest gills.
