Carp Crack

Nymph · Carp · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook heavy scud/wet fly hook, 6-10
  • Thread rust or tan 140-denier

Materials

  • Eyes Bead-chain (or small dumbbell for depth) (1 pair)
  • Tail Marabou or rabbit fur tuft, rust (1 small clump)
  • Body Rust/amber spectrumized dubbing, brushed out (1 pinch)
  • Legs (optional) Fine rubber legs (2)

How to tie it

  1. Tie bead-chain eyes on top of the shank behind the eye so the fly rides point-up.
  2. Tie in a short, sparse rust marabou or rabbit tail at the bend, about half a shank length.
  3. Dub a shaggy, tapered body forward to the eyes; a mixed 'spectrumized' rust-amber blend gives it the anything-edible look that earned the crack nickname.
  4. Optionally add a fine rubber leg on each side at the thorax.
  5. Figure-eight dubbing around the bead chain, whip finish and brush the body out aggressively so it breathes.
