How to tie it
Clamp the short, stout NS172 in the vise and start yellow 140 behind the eye, laying only a short base. This fly uses almost none of the shank, so there is no reason to dress the rest of it.
Tie a small Orvis knot in a piece of 10 lb fluorocarbon and leave the loop open. A low-profile knot matters here: a bulky knot like a clinch shows through the corn kernel and ruins the shape.
Twist a short piece of fluorescent Sunburst Eggstasy until it folds back on itself, pinch the fold, and cinch the fluoro loop just below the tip so it takes on a kernel shape. Trim the butt and singe it lightly with a lighter so it can't fray. If you nick the fluoro it's not a problem, the fish never pulls against that section.
Tie the kernel in and double the tag back over itself for insurance, then repeat the process for a second kernel and mount it on the opposite side of the hook so the two point in different directions.
Take cross wraps over, under and behind the kernels so they splay apart. Keeping them separated is what makes the fly read as loose pieces of corn rather than one blob.
For the third kernel, skip the knot: tie a short piece of Eggstasy in by the tip and take two or three wraps forward to build it directly on the shank. Secure, trim clean and whip finish.
Seal the head with Solarez Bone Dry. You can also use resin to lock a kernel in a particular direction if one insists on lying wrong.
