Carp Carrot

Classic Recipe

  • Hook heavy wet fly / scud hook, 6-10
  • Thread orange 140-denier

Materials

  • Weight Small lead dumbbell eyes (1 pair)
  • Body Orange dubbing with a little flash blended in (1 pinch)
  • Collar Pheasant rump hackle (or orange grizzly marabou) (1)

How to tie it

  1. Tie small dumbbell eyes on top of the shank behind the eye so the finished fly rides hook-point-up.
  2. Dub a tapered carrot-shaped body of orange dubbing from the bend to the eyes, fattest at the front.
  3. Tie in a pheasant rump feather by the tip and wind 2-3 turns as a soft collar behind the dumbbell. The long mottled fibers breathe as the fly sits, which is what sells it to a tailing carp.
  4. Figure-eight dubbing around the eyes to finish the head.
  5. Whip finish and cement.
