Reference Recipe

  • Hook saltwater, 1-2
  • Thread tan 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Black ostrich herl (bead chain or lead dumbbell)
  • Tail Tan/purple material (craft fur + pearl flash)
  • Egg sac Orange permanent marker (Estaz, one band)
  • Body/collar Tan & purple material (dubbing or palmered craft fur)
  • Weed guard Clear weed guard (double-prong mono)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and tie a pair of bead-chain or lead eyes near the hook eye for a hook-point-up ride.
  2. At the bend, tie in a tan craft-fur tail with a few purple accents and pearl flash, about one shank long.
  3. Wind a short band of orange Estaz just ahead of the tail as an egg sac. The hot spot gives the contrast reds key on.
  4. Dub or palmer a buggy tan-and-purple body and collar forward to the eyes.
  5. Figure-8 around the eyes, then tie in a double-prong mono weed guard facing the hook point.
  6. Build a thread head, whip finish, and cement.
