Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard dry fly, 12-14
  • Thread Crimson (Pearsall's shade 13) 8/0

Materials

  • Body Turkey tail herls (4-5 strands)
  • Body band Yellow swan or goose herl (2 strands)
  • Hackle (rear) Black cock hackle (1)
  • Hackle (front) Rhode Island Red (chestnut brown) cock hackle (1)

How to tie it

  1. Run thread to the bend and tie in 4-5 turkey tail herls.
  2. Wrap the turkey herls forward to the midpoint of the shank and tie down, leaving the butts.
  3. Tie in two yellow swan herls and take 2-3 turns, this central yellow hoop mimics the egg sac of the natural sedge.
  4. Continue the turkey herls forward over the front half to the 80% mark and tie off.
  5. Tie in the black cock hackle, then the Rhode Island Red in front of it; wind the black 3 turns, then the red 3 turns through and slightly ahead of it.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and trim.
