Streamer · Salmon/Steelhead · Steelhead · Salmon · Intermediate · 1 version

Reference Recipe

  • Hook steelhead/salmon wet, 4-8
  • Thread orange 6/0

Materials

  • Eyes Silver metal tape (bead chain)
  • Tail Hot orange arctic fox (bucktail, long)
  • Body Gold middle (tinsel chenille or oval tinsel)
  • Hackle Hot orange hackle (saddle, 3-4 turns)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook and start thread; tie a pair of bead-chain eyes just behind the hook eye with figure-8 wraps.
  2. Run thread to the bend and tie in a long hot-orange bucktail tail about 1.5 shank lengths. The long flowing tail is the Comet's signature.
  3. Tie in gold tinsel chenille (or oval tinsel) at the tail.
  4. Wrap the body forward to just behind the eyes.
  5. Tie in a hot-orange saddle hackle and wind 3-4 turns as a collar, sweeping the fibers back.
  6. Figure-8 around and behind the eyes, build a neat head, and whip finish.
