Mount a #10 1XL nymph hook, start black thread and lay a base back to the tail position.
Catch in yellow floss for the tag where you want the front of the tag to sit, then take four big open thread wraps rearward and count them. Wrap a short floss tag, back the thread up those four wraps and bind the floss off; a little fuzz here doesn't matter because the body covers it.
Advance the thread slightly, catch in the gold wire (brassie size) and bind it back to the tail position.
Tie in a small bunch of golden pheasant crest feathers as the tail, angled slightly upward.
Just ahead of the tail tie in about six strands of peacock herl for the covert (wing case); four strands is not enough to cover the body.
Wax the thread, take it to the rear and dub a long noodle of bright yellow spun fur dubbing. Dub the body all the way forward to just behind the eye, in a couple of applications if needed.
Pull the peacock herl forward over the top of the body and catch it off at the front; snip the excess.
Wind the gold wire forward in open turns over the herl to lock it down, tie it off and helicopter the tag. Take a few thread wraps to flatten the area behind the eye for the legs.
Tie in a small bunch of mallard flank with the tips pointing forward, gauging the length you want standing off the sides. Snip the butts, split the bunch in half and figure-8 between the halves until half stands out from each side as side whiskers.
Take the thread in front of the whiskers, push them back slightly and lock them with a few wraps, not swept too far back. Whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
