Take about ten turns of wire on the shank as the optional Weight; it is not a fast sinker even so. Start the Black thread, build a dam in front of the wire, wrap over it and down behind it, and run the thread to the rear.
Catch in the black chenille, then the yellow chenille, stripping a little from the end of the yellow so you bind only the thread core. Leave the thread up front, not too close to the eye, to leave room for the hackle.
Pull the yellow chenille forward out of the way and take two wraps of black.
Pull the black forward and take two wraps of yellow over the shank behind it.
Switch again: two wraps of black, then two of yellow, so you end with two black bands and two yellow. Catch both off at the same time and trim.
Take a few wraps to smooth the chenille ends and make room for the hackle.
Tie in the Black or brown hen hackle by the tip, fold the tag back to lock it, advance the thread a touch and snip the tip.
Wind about one and a half turns of hen, just a hint of legs, and bind it off. Sweep the fibres back with a licked finger to clear a small head.
