Caddis Sparkle Pupa

Nymph · Trout · Intermediate · 2 versions

Reference Recipe

  • Hook standard wet/dry, 12-16
  • Thread tan 8/0

Materials

  • Underbody Amber (or olive) material (Antron dubbing)
  • Overbody sheath Clear/gold overbody sheath (Antron sparkle yarn)
  • Overwing Natural case (sparse deer hair)
  • Head Brown permanent marker (wisp of marabou fluff)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the hook, start thread, and run to the bend.
  2. Tie in a length of Antron sparkle yarn under the shank and another over the top at the bend, these form the gas-bubble sheath.
  3. Dub a plump amber body forward to the 70% mark.
  4. Draw the lower and upper sparkle strands forward over the body to form a translucent sheath and tie off; do NOT trim tight, tease the fibers into a loose halo around the body to mimic the pupa's gas bubble.
  5. Trim the halo to about a gap-width and leave a short sparkle tuft trailing at the tail.
  6. Tie a sparse overwing of natural deer hair, tips reaching the hook point.
  7. Spin a wisp of brown marabou as a fuzzy head and whip finish.
