Cactus Boobie

Egg · Trout · Beginner · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook wide-gap wet/stillwater hook (e.g. Kamasan B175), 8-12
  • Thread To match body 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Eyes Foam booby eyes (plastazote), white (1 pair)
  • Tail Marabou, orange/white/green (1 clump)
  • Body Cactus chenille / Fritz, orange or matching (as needed)
  • Rib (optional) Fine wire or Krystal Flash (1 strand)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in a pair of foam booby eyes at the front of the shank, figure-eighting them securely; whip a little cement in so they can't spin. Why: the buoyant foam eyes float the fly up off the bottom for the classic booby buoyancy.
  2. Run the thread to the bend and tie in a generous marabou tail about one shank length.
  3. Tie in the cactus chenille (or Fritz) and wrap a full flashy body forward to just behind the eyes.
  4. Figure-eight around and behind the eyes to fill, then whip finish behind the eyes and cement.
