How to tie it
Mash the barb, thread a 5/32 in black-nickel bead small-hole-first onto the hook, and seat it behind the eye; add 8-10 wraps of.020 lead-free wire, glue, and slide it forward to lock the bead.
Start the thread behind the weight and wrap back to the bend. Cut two brown-olive pine squirrel strips one shank-length each and tie them one on each side of the shank, hide-to-hide, fur pointing rearward, to form the claws; wrap back to the barb then advance the thread behind the weight.
Form the eye stem: insert the tab of a 4 in cable tie into its receptacle and draw a small loop nearly closed; insert two half-length strands of amber Krystal Flash and a micro rattle into the loop, then cinch the loop tight around them. Blacken both rattle ends with marker for eyes.
Lay the cable-tie assembly over the top of the shank with the eyes hanging just behind the bend; mark and cut the excess tab, point it, and lightly melt the edge, then tie the stem down tightly along the shank back to the barb, checking the eyes sit at 90 degrees.
Snip one pair of amber Krystal Flash antennae short and the second pair about twice as long, then coat the flat cable-tie base with superglue and cover with an open spiral of thread.
Palmer speckled golden-olive soft-hackle feathers up the shank (tied in by the tip, folded into a V, wrapped open-spiral and stroked rearward), repeating with several feathers to build the body up to the tie-in of the tail.
For the tail, tie in two neighboring golden-olive soft-hackle feathers dull-sides together at the bead so they curve upward, then wrap one more body feather in front; whip finish.
Snip a narrow strip of fibers off the top over the cable tie so the fly rides flat, and coat the trimmed area, the thread behind the bead, and both sides of the tail with head cement.
