Classic Recipe

  • Hook Standard emerger/nymph hook (Dai-Riki 125 or TMC 2487), 16-24
  • Thread Light olive UTC 70

Materials

  • Tail Dyed mallard flank fibers (BWO/wood duck) (1 small bunch)
  • Abdomen Working thread (light olive) (wrapped)
  • Wingcase Dyed mallard flank fibers (reserved from tail)
  • Thorax Olive dry-fly dubbing (Baetis/BWO) (pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start thread and tie in a small bunch of dyed mallard flank fibers at the bend; the butts are left long and folded forward later as the wingcase.
  2. Split a few fibers as a short tail (about one-third shank), then wrap the thread forward to build a slim, segmented olive abdomen up to the front third.
  3. Reposition the reserved mallard flank butts pointing rearward over the thorax area to form the wingcase.
  4. Dub a small olive thorax just behind the eye.
  5. Pull the mallard flank wingcase forward over the thorax and tie down behind the eye, leaving a few fiber tips as a stubby emerging-wing bud.
  6. Whip finish and add a drop of head cement.
