Reference Recipe

  • Hook 1XL curved nymph hook, 16-20
  • Thread Olive / brown 8/0

Materials

  • Tail Wood duck / olive (Few mallard flank or hackle fibers)
  • Abdomen Olive-brown material (Fine dubbing)
  • Rib Copper thorax stripe (Fine wire)
  • Wingcase Dark / pearl wing slip (Turkey or Flashback under epoxy)
  • Thorax Olive ostrich herl (Peacock or dark dubbing)
  • Legs Partridge / wood duck (Short fibers, swept back)

How to tie it

  1. Mount the curved hook and start the thread at the 75% mark, laying a base to the bend.
  2. Tie in a short split or bunched tail of mallard fibers, half a shank length long.
  3. Dub a slim tapered olive-brown abdomen forward to the 60% mark.
  4. Rib the abdomen with 5-6 open turns of copper wire and tie off.
  5. Tie in the wingcase material at the 60% mark, then dub a slightly fuller thorax to just behind the eye.
  6. Fold the wingcase forward over the thorax, bind it, and add short swept-back legs at each side.
  7. Whip finish, then coat the wingcase with a drop of epoxy or UV resin for the signature Poxyback shine.
