Reference Recipe

  • Hook Steelhead/intruder shank with trailing loop hook, 1.5-3 inch shank
  • Thread Black 6/0

Materials

  • Trailer hook n/a (Short-shank hook on braid loop)
  • Rear dubbing ball Black / claret rear dubbing ball (Ice dub or seal-type dubbing)
  • Rear hackle Black / claret rear hackle (Marabou plume)
  • Body Silver / claret material (Flat tinsel)
  • Front dubbing ball Black / claret rear dubbing ball (Dubbing plus a few strands flash)
  • Front hackle Black / claret rear hackle (Marabou plume)
  • Over-wing Black / claret material (Two saddle feathers)

How to tie it

  1. Rig the trailer hook on a braid or wire loop and lash it to the rear of the shank, starting the thread at the back.
  2. Spin a small rear dubbing ball with a few strands of flash to prop the first hackle.
  3. Wrap a marabou plume by the tip as a full wet-fly collar in front of the ball so the fibers flow back.
  4. Wrap a short tinsel body forward to the middle of the shank.
  5. Build a second, forward dubbing ball, then wrap another marabou plume as a full front collar.
  6. Tie two saddle feathers flat on top as an over-wing, curving down, reaching to the rear collar.
  7. Build a small head, whip finish, and cement.
