How to tie it
Dress the scud hook with olive thread. This one is tied beadless, if you want weight, wrap lead free wire on the shank before you start the thread rather than adding a bead.
Tie the olive UV Straggle in right at the back of the hook bend and bring the thread forward, stopping about half a hook eye short of the eye.
Wrap the Straggle forward with each turn touching the last until you pass the midpoint, then go back over yourself and forward again. That double layer in the middle is what builds the humped scud profile.
Tie off with tight wraps, squeeze a couple in on the back side, trim close, build a small olive head and whip finish twice.
Sweep all the fibers downward and give the top a haircut so the back is clear of long fibers.
Touch a lighter to the trimmed top and press it flat. Melting the fibers makes a shellback without adding any material at all. And that is where the name comes from.
