Reference Recipe

  • Hook Thin tube fished with a short single trailing hook
  • Thread Hot orange 6/0

Materials

  • Tube Clear thin (Fine plastic tube)
  • Body / Back Bright orange material (Closed-cell foam strip)
  • Legs Bright orange rubber legs (Two to three pairs rubber legs)
  • Thread hot spot Hot orange thread spot (Built-up thread)

How to tie it

  1. Seat a fine tube on the needle and start the hot-orange thread at the rear of the tube.
  2. Bind in a strip of bright orange closed-cell foam at the rear, sized so it is not too bulky for the fly.
  3. Advance the thread in two stations, figure-8ing a pair of orange rubber legs at each station so they splay to the sides.
  4. Pull the foam strip forward over the top to form a floating back and bind it down at the front, leaving a stub.
  5. Take hot-orange thread wraps to build a bright hot-spot head, then whip finish and cement.
  6. Trim the leg tips to a tube length and thread the tippet so a short single hook rides just behind the tube.
