Burkus Rusty Spinner

Dry Fly · Trout · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook (e.g. TMC 100 or 900 BL), 14-18
  • Thread Rusty brown 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tails Split microfibetts, dun or brown (2 sets)
  • Abdomen Rusty-brown turkey biot (1)
  • Spent wings White poly yarn or organza, tied spent (1 clump)
  • Thorax Rusty-brown Superfine dubbing (1 pinch)
  • Sighter Hot orange or pink poly hot-spot (trace)

How to tie it

  1. Tie in two widely split microfibett tails at the bend, splayed to balance the fly flush on the film.
  2. Wrap a segmented rusty-brown biot abdomen forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Tie a clump of white poly yarn crosswise and figure-eight it into spent wings lying flat to each side.
  4. Add a tiny hot orange/pink poly hot-spot sighter on top just behind the eye so you can track the sparse spinner even in low light.
  5. Dub a slim rusty-brown thorax over the wing base and whip finish.
