Burkus' Henry's Lake Thin Mint

Streamer · Trout · Smallmouth Bass · Intermediate · 1 version

Classic Recipe

  • Hook 3XL streamer hook (e.g. Hanak H950 or TMC 5263), 6-10
  • Thread Black 6/0 (140 denier)

Materials

  • Bead Pink/salmon tungsten bead (1)
  • Weight Lead-free wire underbody (8-10 turns)
  • Tail Sandwiched marabou: black, fluorescent melon/orange, brown, with olive Flashabou (3 clumps + flash)
  • Body Peacock or bronze-peacock Simi Seal / Ice Dub (as needed)
  • Hackle Brown/coachman-brown saddle, palmered (1 feather)
  • Rib Clear mono/Powerflex tippet 5X (1 strand)

How to tie it

  1. Slide the pink tungsten bead to the eye and wrap a lead-free wire underbody, shoving it into the back of the bead to lock it.
  2. Tie in a sandwich tail one shank length long: black marabou underneath, fluorescent melon/orange in the middle, brown on top, with a few strands of olive Flashabou; the tricolor stack gives the Thin Mint its look.
  3. Tie in a brown saddle hackle by the tip and a strand of mono rib at the base of the tail.
  4. Dub a shaggy peacock Simi Seal body forward to the bead.
  5. Palmer the hackle forward in evenly spaced turns, then counter-wrap the mono rib forward through the hackle to lock it in and add durability. Whip finish behind the bead.
  6. Pick out the dubbing to make the body buggy.
