Burkus Brown Drake

Classic Recipe

  • Hook standard dry-fly hook (e.g. TMC 100 or Fulling Mill 5065), 8-12
  • Thread Brown or tan 8/0 (70 denier)

Materials

  • Tail/shuck Brown Antron or mayfly-tail fibers (small clump)
  • Abdomen Brown/amber turkey biot or Superfine dubbing (1)
  • Wing post White or tan poly yarn (1 clump)
  • Hackle Grizzly dyed brown, parachute (1 feather)
  • Thorax Brown/amber Superfine dubbing (1 pinch)

How to tie it

  1. Start the thread and tie in a sparse brown tail/shuck about one shank length long at the bend.
  2. Wrap or dub a segmented brown-amber abdomen forward to the 65% mark.
  3. Tie in a tall white or tan poly-yarn post at the 65% mark; this large wing does double duty as a natural-drake silhouette and a visibility sighter.
  4. Wind a grizzly-brown hackle parachute-style around the base of the post, 4-5 turns, and secure.
  5. Dub a brown thorax around the post base to fill and lock the hackle.
  6. Whip finish behind the eye and post-cement the wing base.
