Classic Recipe

  • Hook streamer or jig hook, 2-8
  • Thread brown or rust 140-denier

Materials

  • Weight Dumbbell eyes on top of shank (1 pair)
  • Claws Two rabbit zonker strip tips, splayed (2)
  • Antennae Sili Legs or Krystal Flash (2-4)
  • Body Rabbit zonker strip, wrapped (crosscut works best) (1)
  • Legs Round rubber legs (2-4)
  • Rib/anti-foul (optional) Stiff mono loop each side of claws (2)

How to tie it

  1. Tie dumbbell eyes on top of the shank behind the hook eye so the fly rides point-up for bottom crawling.
  2. At the bend tie in two short rabbit-strip tips, one per side, fur splayed outward as claws. Keep them thin and no longer than half the body; oversized 'defensive' claws can actually put fish off.
  3. Add rubber-leg or flash antennae between the claws, and optionally a short stiff mono loop each side to keep the strips from fouling around the bend.
  4. Tie in a crosscut rabbit strip and palmer it forward in touching turns to the dumbbell, stroking the fur back each wrap for a dense, breathing body.
  5. Tie in a rubber leg on each side mid-body as walking legs.
  6. Figure-eight the strip or dubbing around the dumbbell eyes, whip finish at the hook eye and cement.
